JOHANNA CARMONA

New York State Assembly District 37: Queens

Long Island City, Sunnyside, Woodside, Maspeth, and Ridgewood

Opponents: Claire Valdez (DSA endorsed), Assemblymember Juan Ardilla (DSA member, credibly accused of sexual harassment and refuses to resign)

Johanna Carmona is running for the New York State Assembly’s 37th District that includes Long Island City, Sunnyside, Woodside, Maspeth, and Ridgewood. Born and raised in Sunnyside, Johanna is a native of the communities she is seeking to represent. Carmona’s parents emigrated from Colombia to the United States where they raised Johanna and her twin sister. When Johanna and her sister were very young, their mother suffered from a stroke that left her permanently disabled. With the help of their community, her hard-working parents raised two successful daughters.

Once she graduated law school, Johanna worked at the King’s County DA’s Special Victims Unit where she fought for justice for victims of sexual assault, child abuse, and for medical and health care for 9/11 first responders. Currently, Johanna continues to represent survivors under the Child Victims Act with her own law firm.
